Eagles of Death Metal

Eagles of Death Metal are playing at the Creepy Crawl on Wednesday, May 31... Those of you that saw them open for The Strokes or play at Vintage Vinyl know that this is show that you absolutely do not want to miss.

Hurra Torpedo

Hurra Torpedo, that crazy "Norwegian appliance rock band", is playing at The Pageant on Friday, June 16. I will defintiely try to check them out. Check out their rendition of Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" in the video below:

Coachella Set Times

The set times for this year's Coachella have just been released. Click here to see what I am planning on seeing and when. There are quite a few conflicts and I am sure that this plan will change about 15 minutes into the first day, but what can you do? Stay tuned for a review and pictures of the Festival.

Life Sized Animals

I don't know much about Life Sized Animals other than that they are from St. Louis and that they play a brand of (power) poppy-indie rock that rubs me in the right way. They have an extended essay on their myspace page that talks about a lot of things, including one band member's experiences in his previous band, but, unfortunately, not a whole lot about his current band, the band that is the subject of this blog entry.

Click here to dowload their song "Blood Money" (no right-clicking necessary).

Loose Fur

Loose Fur is Jeff Tweedy, Glen Kotche, and Jim O'Rourke. They recently released their sophmore CD, Born Again in the USA. It's a little more concise and polished than their self-titled debut CD, and is, to me, a more satisfying release. Definitely check them out if you like the poppier side of mid-career Wilco. Here's a song for your listening pleasure. Gotta love the whistling.

Two Shows

Well, really, two half shows. First, I saw about seven songs from Rhett Miller of the Old 97s at the Gargoyle, after my radio show was over, and it was OK. The thing is, they were playing old 97s songs, which was weird to me. I've seen the Old 97s play over 30 times, so seeing any other band play their songs just doesn't sit well with me. Rhett played two songs - "Question" and "Melt Show" by himself and those were the best performances of the evening.

Rhett:

Then I went up to the Duck Room at Blueberry Hill to see Eef Barzelay (Clem Snide) play a solo show. It was just him and a guitar, and it was awesome. I wish I had only seen himtonight. I walked in while he was doing a cover of Skynyrd's "Simple Man". It was a really intimate show, and he can really hold the attention of a room, kind of like Eric Bachmann or Jonathon Richman. He also played the "Ballad of Bitter Honey", "Mike Kalinsky", "African Friend", and his version of Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful." I will recommend seeing him anytime to anyone. It was great.

I missed them at the Hi-Pointe last night, but I caught their 25-minute set at Euclid Records yesterday afternoon. Here's the evidence:

Pictures From Centro-matic

Here are some pictures from the Centro-matic show at Off Broadway on Monday. I missed openers Two Cow Garage and walked in at the end of The Great Lake Swimmers' set due to having been at (well, outside of) the Cardinals home opener. I've seen Two Cow many times, so I'm sure their set was great as usual, and I was impressed by what I saw of Great Lake Swimmers.

Opening Day

I met a couple friends downtown yesterday afternoon to watch the Cardinals' home opener at the new Busch Stadium. Unfortunately, we didn't have tickets, SO we decided to pack up a cooler and watch it from the top of the Stadium East parking garage. At the beginning of the game, there were security guards and cops kicking people off the top level, claiming that, by watching the game, we were somehow breaking copyright laws. Um, riiiiiight. So, we went one level down for two innings, and headed back up to the top level when they finally gave up on getting people off the roof. Here are some pictures of our afternoon (click on the pictures to make them larger):

The M's

You will have two chances to see The M's tomorrow - tomorrow night at the Hi-Pointe and tomorrow afternoon (at 4pm) at Euclid Records. They will also be performing on The Uncontrollable Urge on KDHX 88.1 at 2pm. Here's some mp3s of the band:
The M's - Plan of the man
The M's - Holding Up
The M's - The Banishment of Love

6.8

Pitchfork gave Built to Spill's You In Reverse a mediocre 6.8. Yet, the review itself is very positive, with the only problems apparently being that the songs are too long and there are less big melodies than Keep it Like a Secret. In fact, the review says "Built to Spill sounds downright energized." If long songs with a little less melody that the melody-laden Keep It Like a Secret are all we have to worry about, then this should be a great album. Built to Spill's You In Reverse is released tomorrow, April 11, 2006.

Centro-matic + more

On Monday, April 10, 2006 -- aka OPENING DAY -- three great bands will be gracing the stage of Off Broadway. Those bands are Centro-matic, Great Lake Swimmers, and Two Cow Garage. Now, I'm a huge fan of Centro-matic and Two Cow Garage (see my recent review of their performance at Frederick's Music Lounge's last show here), but I'm less familiar with Great Lake Swimmers. I've heard great things, though. Although I didn't get tickets to opening day at the new stadium, I fully plan on watching it from the top of the Stadium East parking lot. So, it's a good thing it's an afternoon show, so I'll be able to make it to see this great bill. You should make it out, too.

mp3's:
Centro-matic - Covered Up in Mines
Centro-matic - Calling Thermatico
Centro-matic - Triggers and Trash Heaps
Centro-matic - Flashes and Cables
Centro-matic - To Unleash the Horses Now
Centro-matic - Most Everyone Will Find
Centro-matic - Huge in Every City
Centro-matic - D. Boon-free (A Ninth Grade Crime)
Great Lake Swimmers - See You on the Moon!
Great Lake Swimmers - Various Stages
Two Cow Garage - Alphabet City
Two Cow Garage - Burn in Hell
Two Cow Garage - Been So Long
Two Cow Garage - Found

The Raconteurs

Your Head's Not Right has some leaked tracks from the new Raconteurs CD up. For those of you that somehow don't know yet, The Raconteurs are the new band of Jack White and Brendan Benson. Frankly, I hope Mr. White makes this his priority because I feel like The White Stripes have really hit the limit with where they can go. Actually, I've felt that way for some time -- there is just an inherent limitation to a duo, especially a duo with a drummer that can't play.

Bishop Allen - March

I feel like a cheap facsimile of You Ain't No Picasso right now, but I can't not tell you guys that Bishop Allen's latest EP in their series of monthly EP's is now for sale here. It's called March and once again features four songs. They have an mp3 of one of the songs, "Monitor," available for download from their website, too, and it's among the best songs they've recorded, in my opinion:

Sure Juror

I first discovered Sure Juror via You Ain't No Picasso, so I thought I'd share them with you. They are from Glassboro, New Jersey, which is near Philadelphia and they play indie-pop-folk-rock (?) that's really catchy. YANP just posted a new song, so head on over there and check it out. Here's their MySpace page and here's the song that initially hooked me on Sure Juror:
