Clap Your Hands Say Yeah

According to the RFT Blog (and The Pageant's website, apparently) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are playing at The Pageant on Wednesday, May 2nd. If I may interject here, I have to say that this is unacceptable. On May 2nd alone, CYHSY are playing at the Pageant, M Ward is playing at the Fox Theater and John Vanderslice is playing at the Biliken Club. And I mean, seriously. Let's get with it, kids. How is this possible? Edit: Electric Six is playing that night, too, at the Creepy Crawl.

The Long Winters and The Broken West

Yo La Tengo

Yo La Tengo is playing at The Pageant on Tuesday, April 12. They are touring in support of their excellent latest album, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass. Yo La Tengo shows are always a treat and you will never know what you'll get from show to show. The last time I saw them, they were playing at Battery Park in New York City on the 4th of July with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks; it was a jammy, comfortable show. The last time I saw them in St. Louis, at Mississippi Nights, I was sitting at the very back of the room, thoroughly enjoying the show with a few friends when the band encountered some technical problems and left the stage. We figured they were momentarily leaving the stage until the problems were fixed, so we filled up our beers and started into an obnoxiously loud conversation about the Cardinals, music, or something else that did not need to be talked about at the volume we were talking. A few minutes later, a few people in front of us started giving us dirty looks, and we had no idea why; the band still hadn't retaken the stage. They had, however, brought acoustic guitars out to the soundboard -- which was about 15 feet from us -- and proceeded to play three or four songs, sans amps, inthe middle of the crowd. As we were about to respond to the "unwaranted" looks, we realized WE were the asses in the situation. Oops. They played a few covers, and the entire audience listened quietly and intently. After that, they headed back up tot he stage to contnuing rocking our faces off.

In other words, you should check this show out.

KWUR Week

This is week is the annual event known as KWUR Week. KWUR Week is put on by the kids at KWUR 90.3 FM, the college radio station at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, and is one of the two college radio stations I am an alumni of (KCOU 88.1 in Columbia, MO is the other).

KWUR week actually began on Sunday, but I've been a slacker about getting the info posted. KWUR Week features music, movies and more throughout the week on the campus of Washington University, with most events taking place at The Gargoyle, and culminates with Man Man and Bunnygrunt performing this Saturday at The Gargoyle.

Here's the Drive-by Truckers performing "Lookout Mountain" live at the Metro in Chicago on Halloween in 2003. I was at the show, which was nearly three hours long, and had a great time. Centro-matic opened.

Like Whoa

So, for a variety of reasons -- but primarily a combination of being busy at work, being sick, and being a lazy procrastinator and then being busy at work again -- I haven't posted in over a week. At the beginning of last week, I was all set to scoop the Ben Kweller show at The Gargoyle on Feb. 28th and comment on the M Ward show at the Fabulous Fox Theater with Norah Jones and note that a $50-60 ticket price is outrageous for that show, but on last Tuesday, the RFT Blog scooped my scoop and I was deflated. I couldn't muster up the energy to post again for a few days, and then the lethal combination of busy, sick, lazy and busy hit me. ANYWAY, I am ready to go again. I'm well rested. Breathing deeply and fully stretched to avoid any injuries. Stay tuned. In the meantime, here's how records are made:
