This Weekend at the Bluebird

I don't know if you noticed, but the Bluebird has some outstanding shows lined up over the next few weeks and months. You can check out their full calendar here.

This weekend, there are two great shows you should go out of your way to check out.

On Saturday, Berlin Whale, Bunnygrunt, The Ten Thousand, The Undoing of David Wright, Bears, and The Great Tyrant are playing. It'll be an Indie-spolsion! Or something.

Then, on Sunday...

BLUEBIRD

The Ladybug Transistor is playing with Jumbling Towers, Bound Stems, and Say Panther. This show is truly not to be missed. Except I will be out of town. Again. I need to pare down my travel plans, apparently. Daytrotter has done live sessions for both Bound Stems and The Ladybug Transistor and has free live tracks to download.

MP3's:
Bound Stems - Andover
Bound Stems - Western Biographic
Bound Stems - Totipotent

The Circuit

Hey! Look at me! I'm on The Circuit, a new St. Louis-based networking site that, in addition to being St. Louis-centric, is loosely based around music, arts and media types and the people who love them. Discovering The Circuit was more fun than discovering I was a part of The Matrix, that's for sure.

The Hibernauts CD Release Party

There is a great show this Saturday at Off Broadway, featuring The Hibernauts, Gentleman Auction House and Foundry Field Recordings. The show serves as the CD release party for The Hibernauts' new CD, Periodic Fable. You can read a big write-up on The Hibernauts in the Riverfront Times here (and read the outtakes from the interview here). I have included an mp3 of "Into the Storm/Out to the Sea", which is from the new album and is, if I may say so myself, an outstanding advancement from their previous album. The song bursts with energy and excitement and has me wishing I wasn't going on a float trip this weekend so I could actually attend the show. I have yet to see The Hibernauts live, but have only heard great things. You all are well aware of my love for Gentleman Auction House, and Foundry Field Recordings are one of Missouri's best-kept (unfortunately) secrets.

MP3s:
The Hibernauts - Into the Storm/Out to the Sea (via yousendit)
Gentleman Auction House - A Hospital or Heaven (via yousendit)
Foundry Field Recordings - Caribou (Pixies cover) (via yousendit)
Foundry Field Recordings - Beneath The Winter Frames (via yousendit)
Foundry Field Recordings = Buy/Sell/Trade
Foundry Field Recordings - Daryl Loves Vicki

This is me posting about A to Z posting about the USA Today posting about Team Tomato. How very meta. Or lame.

Roman Numerals

If you you're looking for something to do tonight, you could do far worse than heading to the Bluebird to catch Roman Numerals, a great band from Kansas City, and St. Louis' own The Daybreak Boys & Heroes of The Kingdom. Are Roman Numerals math rock? Are they indie? Are their songs angular? Do they have pointy edges? Only you can decide. I think we can all agree that they're post-.... something.

A to Z

It has occurred to me that I may have never pointed out the fact that the good folks at the Riverfront Times' Music department (Annie Z, mostly, but also Christian S, Malcom G, et al) have fandangled their very own blog, A to Z, which is separate from the rags' main blog, which is located here. A to Z has managed to generate a ton of comments, so you can watch the scene splinter with your very own eyes. For serious, though, Annie and Co. bring so much to this town's music scene, and it's great to see people talking about what's going on -- even if it is just people bitching about Christian's alleged distaste for local bands.

They have a great feature on the opening of a new live music venue, the Bluebird. Annie interviews Mike Cracchiolo, the man behind the Bluebird and the bassist and vocalist for The Bureau, here. A to Z also points us to Highway 61 Revised for pictures of the Bluebird's open house last Thursday night.

The venue's official Grand Opening is tonight, and features great music by Ghost In Light, Stella Mora, and The Feed.

Mystery Mix

I am starting a new feature here on Dividing By Zero Will Get You Nowhere, and I'm calling it the Mystery Mix. I am going to provide a mix for you to download and enjoy, consisting of 30-40 minutes of music, but it will be provided as one file, and I won't tell you what songs are on it. Don't go thinking I'm going all Girl Talk on you -- this is essentially just a mix tape with 6-10 songs on it... Click on the big words below to be taken to the download page. I will try and do one mix a week. When I post a new mix, I will include the tracklisting for the previous mix. Please comment and let me know if you like this... or tell me to go to hell.

Built to Spill

Built To Spill are releasing a non-album single this week, a new song called "They Got Away," witha cover of the Gladiators' "Re-Arrange" as the b-side. The band has played both songs during their past few tours, and therefore there are several live bootlegs floating around of these songs...

And anytime there's Built to Spill news, it's a good time to whip out a clip of the Over-Rock Guy:

Berlin Whale CD Release Party

WHALEwhite

St. Louis' Berlin Whale is playing a CD release show this Thusday night at Cicero's with Jumbling Towers, Say Panther, and Ghost of the Forest. Berlin Whale's sound has evolved over the past few years to the point where it now resides - comfortably between jerky Dismemberment Plan-isms of So Many Dynamos and the more melodic, keyboard-driven dance punk that all the kids have been going crazy over in the past few years. Check 'em out.
