Old 97's will be playing at The Pageant on Tuesday, July 10. It will have been three years since the band played in St. Louis, so I am quite excited about this. They put on a great show, and you'd be remiss to, um, miss them.

...Or you can come out and drink some beers to the sweet sounds of my excllent taste in music at The Royale tonight when I DJ. The Royale is on Kingshighway, just south of Arsenal. I go on around 10.

Jumbling Towers & Lapush

If you missed Jumbling Towers with Be Your Own Pet last night, you can head to Lucas School House to see them tonight, when they play with another local band, Lapush. If you haven't seen Jumbling Towers yet, you definitely should. They sound different from nearly every other band in town.

The Daybreak Boys

St. Louis' The Daybreak Boys are celebrating the release of their debut EP, The Bowery, tonight at The Duck Room with Dozemarypool and John Boy's Courage. The Daybreak Boys play jangly indie pop with a strong thread of moody 80's indie rock that was quite the rage earlier this decade with bands like the Kaiser Chiefs and Hot Hot Heat.

The Daybreak Boys - Baby, You're Darling

Captured! By Robots

In case you're not in the dancing mood and don't plan on heading up to the Duck Room to see !!!, you should head out to Off Broadway TONIGHT, to see Captured! By Robots and St. Louis' own Riddle of Steel. That's a solid lineup, and if I wasn't going to see the greatness that is !!! live, I would definitely be at Off Broadway. This will be the first C!BR show in St. Louis I've missed in five years.

Interpol at The Pageant

!!!

One show you do not want to miss is next week's !!! show at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room (that's pronounced chk chk chk, for those of you that don't already know...). They put on a blistering live show that will make you want to dance regardless of your normal proclivity to shake your hips. They played three years ago at the old Creepy Crawl and they are a band that definitely benefits from playing a small room like the Duck Room.

Starlight Mints Live Review and Photos

On Friday, May 4th, I headed up to Blueberry Hill's Duck Room to see the Starlight Mints. They were quite good, but it was my least favorite of the three times I'd seen them; last time was two years ago with Pleasant Grove at the Creepy Crawl and three years ago with the Flaming Lips. The crowd was sparse - maybe 75-100 people, so I think that affected the energy of the night. They were good, nonetheless, and played everything you'd want to hear. Everything, Now! opened the show and were pretty good. They seemed like they had only been together for a short while, still working on the practical issues of how to start and live stop songs.

Here's a video of Starlight Mints performing "Seventeen Devils":

I didn't get very good pictures, owing to the bright lights they put right up in the front of the stage, but here are some anyway.

Gore Gore Girls & Left Arm

Be sure to head to Atomic Cowboy tonight to check out the Gore Gore Girls, who are also playing with local garage-punks Left Arm. The Gore Gore Girls are an R&B-styled girl group that plays Detroit-styled punk rock. Left Arm is a great band, as well, mining from the same musical vein as a long line of great midwestern rock and roll, like the Didjits, The Replacements, The Stooges and The Oblivians. Additionally, the band now features Joe Stumble, the man behind Last Days of Man On Earth, on GUITAR.

MP3s:
Gore Gore Girls - Fox in a Box
Gore Gore Girls - All Grown Up
Gore Gore Girls - Astral Man
Gore Gore Girls - I'm Gonna Get You Yet
Left Arm - Feelin Alright
Left Arm - Jason Says To Dance
Left Arm - As Seen On TV
