Bouncing Souls

I know it's pretty last-minute of me to remind you that Bouncing Souls are playing tonight at the Gargoyle with Street Dogs, Whole Wheat Bread, and Left Alone, but that's exactly what I'm doing. Bouncing Souls are one punk band that I continue to listen to throughout the years, even as my music tastes change, morph, and broaden. Their knack for a brain-drilling melody and their street sense help them transcend any allegations of trendiness or bandwagon hopping.

Mississippi Nights

Well, the rumor mill's at it again; this time, it's another rumor predicting the closing of Mississippi Nights. It apparently has to do with the new Casino being built on the Landing. Is this true? Are they planning on moving to a new location? Please comment if you know anything more. Hopefully, it's only a rumor.

The Oranges Band

The Oranges Band are playing at Off Broadway this Tuesday, November 28th, with local bizarre-pop band Shed Shot. I'm a big fan of The Oranges Band's jangly take on pop-punk and power pop. A definite point of reference is Ted Leo, but listen to the mp3's provided below to make up your own mind. I am definitely looking forward to the show.

Silversun Pickups

As Annie Zaleski has astutely noted on the Riverfront Times Blog, Silversun Pickups have canceled their show with Wolfmother tonight and their in-store performance at Vintage Vinyl due to their being booked to perform on David Letterman tomorrow.

The Conformists

One last thing for this evening - The Conformists' 10th Anniversary show is tonight at the Ground Floor in Belleville. If you have never seen The Conformists live, they are somehting to behold. A band has to be tight to play music that so sounds like it's about to derail at any given moment, and The Conformists are one of the tightest bands around.

The band's newest album, Three Hundred, was produced by Steve Albini and is coming out soon on 54º40' or Fight! Records.

Southside Rocks Off!

The Bandwitth Collective presents Southside Rocks Off! 2 on Saturday, November 25, 2006.

Southside Rocks Off 2 is a benefit "show of shows" in support of your community radio station 88.1 FM KDHX. The fundraiser is also to promote an up and coming nonprofit organization called Band With Collective that will represent local artists and musicians finding new and creative ways to promote St. Louis Culture.

Wristbands are $10, but you don't need one to enter the venues. All proceeds from the wristbands will be donated to KDHX, who helped make this event possible. Show your wristband and you will get deals on food, drinks and all sorts of other things at participating venues. 40 bands are playing for free to help keep community radio on the air. Please come out and buy a wristband to show your support. Also, Southside Rocks Off t-shirts will be available for purchases at the locations the wrist bands are sold. Come out and support your local artists!

Tight Pants Syndrome

The Rock 'n' Roll Craft Show

The Third Rock 'n' Roll Craft Show is taking place this weekend at the Mad Art Gallery in Soulard. There will be tons of local artists and crafts(wo)men selling their wares in time for the holiday season. On top of that, there will be live music from some great local bands. Once again, there are a half-billion things to do in St. Louis this weekend. I've got three of them to tell you about and I'm going to separate each of these events into different posts, so bear with me. The first event I want to tell you about is the Thanksgiving Leftovers Party at Off Broadway on Saturday night. Performing that night will be SleepWalker, The Aquatic Record, and "very special roaming performances" by The Monads & Robb Steele. The event is a pot-luck party; bring your Thanksgiving leftovers and get in for $3. Doors are at 8:00pm and the event is 18+.

Coachella '07

Of Montreal

Of Montreal will be gracing a St. Louis stage for the third time in a year when they play at Mississippi Nights on February 22 with Elekibass in support of their new CD, Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, which will be released on January 23 via Polyvinyl. Of Montreal always puts on a good show, so make sure you pencil this show into your calendar now.

Playing for the People

I likes me some Built to Spill, and I love it when Doug Martsch does stuff like this. When Built to Spill was on tour this past summer, their show in Boulder, CO was sold out. Nonetheless, there were a bunch of kids hanging out outside of the venue, in the hopes that a few extra tickets might be released. Although no additional tickets were released, Doug gave the kids a great impromtu performance outside of the theater. Check out the kid in the front row that's got a serious case of Over-Rock.

This Weekend

If you are going to be in St. Louis this weekend, you are going to have some great local music options.


Riddle of Steel

On Friday night at Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, you can catch a free and wonderfully unexpected billing including post-punk guitar gods Riddle of Steel playing alongside three hip hop acts, including CunningLynguists, Midwest Avengers and Blackspade.


Gentleman Auction House

Then, on Saturday night, you can head out to Off Broadway to catch Dividing By Zero favorites Gentleman Auction House play with St. Louis' own Jon Hardy & the Public and Champaign, IL-based Headlights. I saw the Headlights a few months back. Here's what I had to say about that show:

"The most obvious musical reference would be Grandaddy, with less fuzzy
distortion. The songs were sung by both the dude guitar player and the chick
keyboard player. The chick had a great, great, voice. Breathy like Bjork, but
not quite. It fit with the music very well. They would go from keyboard-heavy
ambient moments right into bright and poppy indie rock songs. The bass player
also played keyboards and would occasionally whip out an acocrdian. I liked
them."

Jon Hardy & the Public play straight-ahead rock that bleeds Midwest and Rock. Think The Replacements, Marah, or Neil Young. They're good, too. Real good. Check out the magnificent song "The Flood", available in convenient mp3 format, below...

Bishop Allen - October

Bishop Allen's October EP is finally here. The single they've released from this EP is a song called "Clementines" (and was previously called both "A Toast From Benefit Street” and “Come Clean”), which is also the name of the unreleased follow-up album to Charm School. Dividing By Zero Will Get You Nowhere Podcast

I've been swamped with work, but I feel like I've got to get something up here or you'll never come back...

Owen Pye

The most immediate comparisons that enter one's head upon listening to Highland, Illinois-native Owen Pye's debut CD, If That's Cool With You, are Rhett Miller and Conor Oberst. From the vocal delivery to the production values, he does both comparisons justice. His youthfulness and enthusiasm are evident throughout the CD. The songs primarily and prominently feature just Owen's voice and guitar, but effectively utilize backing instruments and musicians to make an earthy, intimate recording.

Owen played in several bands, including Cat, Jump! (who were featured many a time on previsou Dividing By Zero radio shows) before embarking on his solo career. He's ambitious, too - he's planning a national tour for next spring. Check out his myspace page if you want to help bring him to your town.

He is playing tonight at the Lemp Arts Center with Nicole Lau and Miles Malloy.
